With only eight points on the board, Maximilian Günther is currently 16th in the standings. For some that might indicate a really bad season, but for the German driver it is far from the truth. His past seven races tell a story of regularly finishing just outside the points.
Talking to The Girls Who – Motorsport after the first Berlin E-Prix race, he indicated that his problems came in just before the PitBoost window. He explains, “As a collective, maybe the energy was worrying a bit, which I think was the wrong call.“ His race had been decided after his team were struggling with energy management.

Besides that, the DS Penkse driver felt like their performance could have been improved in the main phase of the race. “I think undercut or overcut would have been good.” In the end, the team decided on a strategy that meant they were always stuck in traffic. This decision compromised a lot of the race, as a result leaving Günther to lose many positions in the second half of the race. The 28-year-old driver tried to get into the points with a good recovery strategy, which almost paid off, seeing him finish in 11th at the end.
What positive is he taking away from Race 1? He feels like his first ten laps were strong. “We were doing really well. Good energy, good track position. Promising for Race 2.” With more energy saving in Race 2, the team needs to pick the right moment to get through the field. Günther highlights, “Energy is going to be key, but so is your attack mode strategy. We can definitely take something away from today.”
