For six decades, the Andretti family has been a household name in motorsports; from Formula 1 to IndyCar and NASCAR – the Andretti name has been the heartbeat of American racing.
As Marco Andretti announced his retirement from IndyCar, this draws a conclusion to one of the longest running stories in motorsports history.
While the Andretti teams live on, for the first time in twenty years, no Andretti will take the start at the Indy500.
Mario Andretti: The Foundation
It all started with Mario Andretti. Born in Motovun, Croatia in 1947, he migrated to America where he created one of the most prolific racing teams in the world.
His name is etched alongside some of the motorsport greats – the only one of the two drivers to win races in Formula 1, NASCAR and IndyCar.
Andretti is one of the four people in IndyCar history to win back-to-back championships alongside A.J. Foyt, Álex Palou and Scott Dixon.
His victory at the 1969 Indy500 is one of the most celebrated and remembered wins in the series history to date. In 1979, he became the last American driver to win the Formula 1 championship with Lotus.
He also won the NASCAR Daytona 500 in 1967.
His decades of racing excellence built the solid foundation for his family’s racing legacy to live on as he passed the torch to his son Michael.
Michael Andretti: The Architect
As one of IndyCar’s most successful drivers, Michael Andretti was a fierce competitor throughout the 1980s and ’90s, with 42 career wins and a championship to his name.
But it was his role as a team owner that he truly cemented the family’s lasting influence.
Under Michael’s leadership, Andretti Autosport [now known as Andretti Global] became a motorsport powerhouse, winning multiple Indy 500’s.
Though Michael Andretti never secured an Indy500 win himself, he did it while leading his team with drivers such as Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti, and Alexander Rossi.
Through his leadership, the team expanded into INDY NXT, IMSA, Formula E and the Australian Supercars Championship.
The cherry on top is the team’s role with a new Formula 1 team, in collaboration with Cadillac for their entry into the series.
Slowly but steadily, Andretti Autosport rebranded to Andretti Global for their growing impact on global motorsports.
Marco Andretti: The Last Torch Bearer (For Now)
After his IndyCar debut in 2006, Marco Andretti finished second at his first Indy500 at almost nineteen years of age. In the same year, he won his first race at the Sonoma Raceway.
Although he debuted young, he was surrounded by immense pressure as he built his career around the expectations tied to his last name.
While the family name is powerful, for Marco Andretti it built an idea of who he should be based on his father and grandfather’s lasting legacy.
Over 20 seasons, Marco became a steady, respected competitor, collecting two victories, six poles, and 20 podium finishes.
In 2020, he secured pole at the Indy 500 – a poignant reminder of the speed that runs in the family.
Eventually, the desire to race purely out joy gradually diminished as he managed the weight of massive expectations.
On October 29th, 2025, Marco announced his retirement from racing. He shared the following in a candid statement:
“I’ve lived a life surrounded by expectations. But I’m proud of the effort and of what the Andretti name stands for.”
His retirement means next year’s Indy500 will be the first time since 2005 with no Andretti driving in the field.
The Andretti Curse
While many celebrate the rich legacy of this team, they often focus on one frustrating chapter: the so-called Andretti Curse.
Andretti Curse: The belief that no matter how fast or powerful they become; fate consistently finds a way to prevent them from winning the Indy 500.
It began with Mario’s lone Indy 500 victory in 1969, followed by years of near-misses, mechanical failures, and cruel twists of luck.
Michael led more laps at Indianapolis than many race winners combined, yet the checkered flag always slipped away.
Marco nearly broke the streak in 2006, finishing second by a blink, and even his pole position in 2020 felt more like defiance than deliverance.
While this is a mere highlight of racing’s unpredictable nature, it has been titled as a “curse” by those who’ve been around long enough.
Not a supernatural curse, but rather a simple reminder that no matter how great one is, setback is an imminent part of your story.
TWG Preserving Andretti’s Legacy
When Marco Andretti stepped back and Michael’s organization entered a period of change, there were questions about what would become of Andretti Global.
The answer came in 2025, when TWG Motorsports acquired a controlling interest in the team — but crucially chose to retain the Andretti name.
Under their stewardship, the team continues to compete in IndyCar, Formula E, and other series, carrying the same drive for innovation and victory that defined the family for generations.
In many ways, this partnership ensures that the Andretti legacy continues – not as a relic of the past, but as a living, evolving presence in global motorsport.
Despite the changes, the name still echoes with six decades of ambition and the unshakable spirit of the Andretti’s.
