Stoffel Vandoorne looks back on his 2024/2025 Formula E campaign with cautious optimism. Even if the results didn’t seem to match his expectations. The Girls Who – Motorsport spoke to the 2021/2022 World Champion about his short-lived tenure with Maserati MSG Racing.

Adjustment Without Reward

After two seasons with DS Penske, Vandoorne made the switch to Maserati ahead of Season 11. The move kept him within the Stellantis group, a continuity that eased the transition. “The powertrain and many of the systems were the same as the previous season for me,” he told The Girls Who – Motorsport in London. “Naturally, it’s a new group of people and a new group of engineers and that always takes a bit of time to adapt. But overall it’s gone well.”

Performance, however, proved inconsistent for him. In terms of results, it’s been quite up and down,” he admitted. “We’ve had some highlights and also some tougher races. That’s been our biggest issue this year, I think. Sometimes we were very strong, sometimes not so strong.”

Qualifying emerged as a key weakness for Vandoorne in the Masarati car. That used to be one of our strengths, but we haven’t really been able to show much of that this year,” he said. “Especially with the races being a being quite a bit faster this season, you need to be able to start further in the front. On the other hand, our races have been good, and we’ve been able to move up positions.”

Vandoorne closed out the season with fourth and twelfth place at the London E-Prix a mixed finale that mirrored his year as a whole. Unfortunately not. It’s been like this the entire season – up and down. We were just missing some speed.”

The Future Remains Unclear

The 33-year-old had been expected to remain on the Formula E grid full-time for 2025/2026. During the London finale in July, he repeatedly confirmed to The Girls Who – Motorsport that he held a contract with Stellantis. But the driver market has since shifted rapidly.

Vandoorne has now been named a reserve driver for Jaguar TCS Racing. He has also announced his departure from Peugeot in the FIA World Endurance Championship. He was widely linked to Genesis’ incoming WEC programme, though recent developments may have halted that move. French media have even speculated about a potential return to Peugeot. A twist few saw coming.

For now, Vandoorne’s next chapter remains unwritten. To be continued…
