This announcement was rumored a couple of days ago , but it’s now official: McLaren is leaving Formula E at the end of the season. Why is this decision being made ?

McLaren Racing announced that they will not pursue their participation in the FIA Formula E World Championship beyond the current season. They still remain focused on the 2025 season, which has been going great for them, with Taylor Barnard becoming the youngest-ever polesitter in Formula E history at the Jeddah E-Prix and being third in the team championship with 67 points. The reason for this decision is that after a strategic review of their racing portfolio, they’ve decided to not pursue in Formula E.

Focus on WEC

The real reason might also be linked to their return in the World Endurance Championship. They want to focus on bringing a good level of racing in that category and have to make a choice between all the racing series they are a part of. They will still be the only team participating in Formula 1, Indycar and WEC. And between a Triple Crown title and staying in Formula E, they made their choice. Zak Brown declared :

“The time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction – including our 2027 entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship”.

Ian James, Team Principal & Managing Director of McLaren Electric Racing, recognized the value of Formula E for the team : “Although our McLaren Racing chapter comes to an end, we recognise the value and power of Formula E as a World Championship and platform for positive change as the sport goes from strength to strength. Work is well underway to explore the best opportunities for the team to continue competing beyond Season 11. In the meantime, we will be giving our all to make sure that we finish the current chapter of our Formula E adventure in style.”
