To fight the new rules of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), especially the ‘no swearing’ one, the World Rally Championship (WRC) drivers adopted a new attitude : silence.
The saga continues in rally. Following Adrien Fourmaux’s swearing accident in an after-stage interview in Finland that cost him a 10.000€ fine, the World Rally Championship (WRC) drivers created their union. The World Rally Drivers Alliance (WoRDA) is based on the GPDA system in Formula 1. The competition continues this weekend with Safari Rally Kenya. However, all the drivers came to a conclusion: striking against the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
Silence against the FIA
Silence is the new strategy to show the driver’s anger. This is what the drivers explained this morning, during the interview after the shakedown. The WoRDA later posted a statement on Instagram, explaining the reason: “ […] it is necessary to maintain a certain freedom of expression and to keep emotions alive while drivers don’t need to be afraid of getting punished in any way.”
The other alternative they found was to answer in their mother tongue, to explain the situation. The 2024 World Champion, Thierry Neuville, was one of them. Since then, a wave of support from the fans has arisen.
The FIA has yet to react.
