The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association has just announced Carlos Sainz as a new director. He will be joining George Russell in this role.
It was only a matter of time before the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) announced a new third director. With Sebastian Vettel leaving Formula 1, a vacancy at the GPDA remained. It’s now official—Carlos Sainz is taking the position. He declared : “I am passionate about my sport and think we drivers have a responsibility to do all we can to work with the stakeholders to forward the sport in many aspects. So I’m very happy and proud to do my part by taking on the Director’s role in the GPDA.”
Founded in 1961, this association aims to facilitate dialogue between the FIA and the drivers on matters such as safety in Formula 1. It is composed of a president and at least two directors. Alexander Wurz, a former Formula 1 driver, has been the president since 2014. George Russell has been one of the directors since 2021, and Anastasia Fowle has also been a director since 2021, focusing on the legal aspects. Carlos Sainz now joins as the second director. With recent controversies surrounding the ‘censorship’ of drivers, the new pairing has a lot on their plate.
