Max Verstappen tops the final practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The Dutchman was just 2 hundredths ahead of Kimi Antonelli. Each practice session has seen a different driver on top this weekend proving the opportunities this track. The lack of practice in the rain could bring new challenges to the teams ahead of what could be a very wet qualifying.
Troubles with Hamilton’s new engine
Lewis Hamilton voiced concerns about vibrations in his Ferrari towards the start of the session. After the mechanics had a look at the Ferrari SF26 they sent the Brit back out. Only to have him soon back in the pit lane with smoke surrounding the cockpit. A suspected issue with his new internal combustion engine meaning he could be facing another penalty.
Despite Verstappen’s strong session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, he will take a ten-place grid penalty alongside both the Ferrari’s and George Russell on Sunday. Taking four of the front runners to the back of the grid could allow for an exciting race in a place that encourages overtaking.
Lance Stroll was another driver that had to cut his final practice short. He had a suspected battery issue just 15 minutes into the session. With only seven laps completed, luck has not been on his side this season.
Hulkenberg’s first time on track
Nico Hulkenberg took on his first practice of the weekend and ended up 13th after some valuable lap time. Whilst the German was 1.2 seconds off the pace, his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto was just 1 second away from the top of FP3 in tenth.
Both the Racing Bulls came out ahead of Isack Hadjar in the timings. For Liam Lawson with no confirmed seat for next season it’s all to play for.
Once the drivers focused on qualifying simulations the competition for fastest time was just between Lando Norris, Antonelli and Verstappen. The McLaren and Mercedes pose a threat to each other. However, the four-time world champion should not be discounted from the race given his history at this track.
Sergio Perez will be hoping not to receive a penalty after he was seen throwing a suspected piece of metal out his cockpit at turn 8. The Cadillac driver is going to be investigated.
