Jorge Martín wins the Austrian Sprint Race. After a crash from Pedro Acosta that handed Martín the lead of the race, he is also now back into the lead of the championship. The podium was completed by Marc Márquez and Marco Bezzecchi.
Race Start
The lights went out and all the riders made the run up to turn one. Martín got a good start however ran wide at turn one and lost the lead to M. Márquez. He lost the momentum and fell back to P8 by the end of lap one.
M. Márquez’s lead did not last long with Pedro Acosta taking the lead at turn three. Acosta started pulling a gap to the rest of the field. Bezzecchi settled into the race in third.
A double long lap penalty came the way for Diogo Moreira and Raúl Fernández for jumping the start. As the race settled down Martín started making his way back up the field. Within five laps he made up four positions and was making his way to try and get a podium position.
On lap 7, Martín made his way into the podium positions, passing Bezzecchi into turn one. Martín then got past M. Márquez one lap later at turn one again.
Five Laps To Go
Even after passing M. Márquez, Martín could not pull away from the Ducati man. Even Bezzecchi was keeping up with the podium pair.
Franco Morbidelli crashed out at Turn 2 with four laps to go. One lap later, disaster hit for the race leader as Acosta crashed out at turn two, ruining KTM’s dreams of winning at home. This handed the lead to Martín. Acosta remounted but pitted on the last lap.
Even with all the drama at the start and luck with Acosta’s crash, Martín managed to take the sprint win ahead of M. Márquez and Bezzecchi. This takes Martín back into the championship lead three points ahead of M. Márquez.
