Today, MotoGP has revealed the first date on the 2027 calendar: 5-7th March. Locking in the opening round, the series will remain in Thailand to begin the season. For the third year in a row the Chang International Circuit in Buriram will kick off the action. And next year, it will be the debut for the new regulations.
The Perfect Opener
Debuting in 2018, Thailand has a growing importance in the series. After being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2021, it returned to the calendar in 2022. As its fanbase grew and the atmosphere developed, in 2025 it became the opening round for MotoGP.
Over 2.83-miles, the Chang International Circuit features 12 corners and three straights. It is a highly technical track due to its high speed stop-and-go nature. From plenty of overtaking areas to high speed sections and heavy braking zones, this track features a bit of everything. Consequently, it’s a perfect track to test at.
Pre-season testing here will be key for teams and riders to adjust to the new regulations. And, as the first round, it will be an important track to see how the new machines fare in race conditions. Being a perfect testing ground makes it a great track to start the season on.
MotoGP Reaffirms Relationship with Thailand
Over the years, the Thailand Grand Prix has increased in popularity and established itself as a standout destination on the MotoGP calendar. 2026 saw a record crowd in Buriram with 228,228 attendees. This demonstrated the growth of the race and the strength of MotoGP’s following in the area. As a result, this reinforced Thailand as one of the series’ most important markets.
