Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, converting pole position into a long-awaited win after teammate Oscar Piastri’s race unravelled in cruel fashion.

Drama from the start

The McLaren pair looked untouchable in the opening stages as Piastri jumped Norris off the line to lead into Turn 1. The Australian appeared on course for victory before contact while lapping Carlos Sainz left his car with damage, which later developed into a gearbox failure and forced him to retire with just 15 laps remaining.

Norris inherited the lead and never looked back, managing the gap to Max Verstappen to secure McLaren’s first Grand Prix win of the year. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium after another measured drive for Mercedes, extending his advantage heading into the summer break.

Difficulties persisted for some

Behind the podium battle, Ferrari endured a frustrating afternoon. Charles Leclerc inherited fourth after teammate Lewis Hamilton received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping the seven-time world champion to fifth despite crossing the line ahead.

George Russell’s difficult season also continued. Starting sixth, an anti-stall issue at the start dropped the Mercedes driver to the back of the field, leaving him with a mountain to climb. A determined recovery limited the damage to seventh place, but another race compromised by reliability leaves Russell eager for the reset provided by Formula 1’s summer break.

For Norris, however, Hungary marked a turning point. After months of near misses, the reigning World Champion finally translated McLaren’s pace into victory. While Piastri was left wondering what might have been, Norris heads into the second half of the season with renewed momentum and the belief that his title defence is far from over.
