Qualifying started on a damp track after Free Practice 3 was cancelled earlier in the day due to adverse weather conditions. But the lack of running didn’t stop Edoardo Mortara from clinching pole position over Antonio Felix Da Costa.

Group A

Group A of qualifying consisted of Evans, Dennis, Barnard, Müller, Buemi, Eriksson, Drugovich, Nato, Da Costa and Vergne.

We got off to a rough start in Group A as Race Director Marek Hanaczewski announced to the drivers that there was an issue with the pitlane lights. Track temperature was low compared to the day before at 32°. Due to this, lap times kept coming in fast as drivers adapted to the drying circuit.

Sebastian Buemi was unhappy with Felipe Drugovich as he blocked him during a flying lap. Track evolution was so high that drivers were told to keep pushing. But in the end it was Da Costa who topped the group. He was followed by Mitch Evans, Taylor Barnard and Norman Nato, who all progressed into the duel stages of qualifying. A shock exit came from yesterday’s pole sitter Jake Dennis, who narrowly missed out on the top 4 along with his teammate Drugovich, Nico Müller, Vergne and the two Envision drivers, Eriksson and Buemi.

Group B

Onto the second group, which contained Marti, yesterday’s winner, Dan Ticktum, Mortara, De Vries, Rowland, Wehrlein, Günther, Maloney, Di Grassi and Cassidy.

Yet again, drivers struggled into Turns 10 and 11 during the session, with Günther opting to take the escape road to avoid a collision with the wall. The drying track caused other problems during the session, with drivers suffering from overheating tyres.

Mortara topped Group B, followed by Nyck De Vries, Dan Ticktum and Oliver Rowland. A repeat of yesterday’s qualifying, as we saw Wehrlein exit early. He was joined by Marti, Cassidy, Günther and the two yellow Lolas, Maloney and Di Grassi. However, it was very close, as first to eighth was covered by only a tenth

Quarter Final

Barnard vs. Evans

With his title rival getting knocked out in the group stages, Mitch Evans needed to take advantage. Unfortunately, Taylor Barnard got the better of him across one lap. Evans will start P7.

Da Costa vs. Nato

Another close duel between Da Costa and Norman Nato, with the two being split by 2 tenths. It was the Jaguar driver, Da Costa, who set the faster lap.

Ticktum vs. De Vries

Dan Ticktum was throwing everything at his lap to beat De Vries. He suffered a massive snap of oversteer into Turn 16. But that didn’t stop the Brit from beating the Dutchman by 4 tenths.

Mortara vs. Rowland

The lap started badly for Rowland. Puddles of water were still on the track down the straight, making it hard to judge braking into Turn 1. Oliver Rowland went way too deep into the first corner, meaning Mortara took the win by over one second as they came across the line.

Semi-Final

Da Costa vs. Barnard

Though both drivers made mistakes heading into Turn 1, Da Costa managed to salvage the lap. He progressed through to the final in qualifying.

Ticktum vs. Mortara

Only 1.6 tenths split these two apart as both drivers pushed hard. Unfortunately for Ticktum, he pushed too hard and hit the outside wall in the final corner, costing him time and the final.

Final

It was Antonio Felix Da Costa and Edoardo Mortara who battled it out for pole position in Tokyo. With both drivers tied on points in the championship, this qualifying was more than just a grid position. Immediately, tricky turn 1 struck again, this time costing Da Costa. Mortara had a perfect first sector and was, in fact, three tenths quicker than any other driver in all sessions so far.

He beat Da Costa by just over six-tenths of a second and secured his fourth Julius Baer Pole Position of the season. With this qualifying result, he also equals the record for most poles in a single campaign.
