David Alonso returned to the top step of the podium in spectacular fashion, prevailing in a three-way battle that went all the way to the final chicane at Assen. The rider held off championship leader Manuel González by just 0.024 seconds to claim his first Moto2 victory of the 2026 season, while Senna Agius completed the podium after a remarkable late-race charge.
González Leads the Way on Sunday
The Moto2 grid lined up with González looking to further extend his championship advantage after another consistent weekend. Before the race even began, there was drama elsewhere in the paddock. Daniel Muñoz, who had originally qualified fourth, was relegated to the back of the grid after his Q2 lap time was disqualified due to a technical infringement. Meanwhile, several replacement riders were once again in action, all stepping in for injured regulars.
As the lights went out, González and Alonso quickly established themselves at the front of the field. The pair traded strong laps throughout the opening stages, with Alonso working hard to reclaim the lead after briefly surrendering first place to the championship leader on Lap 17.
The race soon developed into a thrilling three-rider contest as Agius closed the gap with an impressive late-race charge. The Australian extracted everything from his tyres to join the leaders, setting up a dramatic run to the finish.
Behind the leading trio, Izan Guevara enjoyed another solid afternoon. Iván Ortolá, fresh from his maiden Moto2 victory at Brno, recovered brilliantly from 16th on the grid to climb into fifth, while Daniel Holgado crossed the line in sixth despite serving a track limits penalty.
Final Chicane Decides Assen Thriller
The closing laps delivered exactly the spectacle Assen is renowned for. Contact between the front three through the final chicane on the penultimate lap offered a preview of the dramatic finish still to come.
González began the final lap leading the field but adopted a defensive approach into the final sequence of corners. Alonso seized the opportunity, sweeping around the outside into the last chicane before positioning his Aspar machine perfectly to prevent any counterattack.
The Colombian held firm over the final metres to secure his first victory of 2026, crossing the line just 0.024 seconds ahead of González. Agius remained glued to the pair until the flag, completing an outstanding podium after sacrificing his tyres in pursuit of victory.
Penalties Shake Up the Top Ten
Guevara finished comfortably clear in fourth, while Ortolá’s recovery from the sixth row earned an impressive fifth-place finish. Holgado secured sixth despite his earlier penalty, but post-race revisions significantly altered the remainder of the top ten.
Alex Escrig initially crossed the line in seventh but failed to correctly serve an outstanding track limits penalty. Race Direction converted the sanction into a ride-through penalty after the race, adding enough time to demote the rider to 24th in the final classification.
The revised results promoted Adrián Huertas to seventh, and home favourite Collin Veijer delighted the Dutch fans by finishing ninth. Ferrández completed the top ten despite receiving a late long lap penalty. Having led a Moto2 race for the first time earlier in the weekend, the rider also retained his position as the leading rookie.
González Extends Championship Advantage
Although Alonso celebrated victory, González’s second-place finish further strengthened his grip on the Moto2 World Championship.
The Spaniard now leads the standings on 185.5 points, extending his advantage to 57.5 points over Izan Guevara. Agius climbs to third with 123 points, while Alonso’s victory moves him into fourth overall on 116 points. Vietti drops to fifth after his Assen retirement, remaining on 109 points heading into the next round.
