Rafael Câmara converted pole into a commanding victory in the Formula 2 Feature Race at Barcelona. This way, overcoming an early loss of the lead and executing a perfectly judged strategy to take the chequered flag by more than nine seconds.
Dunne Makes the Perfect Start
Câmara started from pole alongside Alexander Dunne, but it was the Rodin Motorsport driver who made the stronger launch when the lights went out. Dunne surged ahead on the run to Turn 1, relegating Câmara to second place. Behind them, Rafael Villagómez made an excellent start of his own, diving boldly to the inside of Gabriele Minì and Nikola Tsolov to snatch third position.
The race was quickly neutralised when Goethe stopped on track at the pit exit, bringing out the Safety Car. Racing resumed on Lap 4, with Dunne controlling the restart and immediately establishing a small advantage over Câmara. While Dunne set the early pace, Câmara remained firmly in contention. The Brazilian stayed within DRS range throughout the opening phase, refusing to allow the race leader any breathing room.
Further back, Villagómez began reporting rear tyre issues. Meanwhile, Tsolov, having started on the Hards, struggled to match the pace of those around him on the softer tyre. When the pit window opened on Lap 8, Minì used DRS to move ahead of Villagómez for third place, while several drivers elected to stop early. However, Invicta Racing had a different plan for their race leader.
Invicta Plays the Long Game
The strategic battle intensified when Dunne made his pit stop on Lap 13, handing Câmara a crucial opportunity to attempt the overcut. The Brazilian responded immediately, setting a personal best first sector as he pushed to maximise the advantage of staying out longer.
Even as more drivers peeled into the pits, Câmara continued to circulate at impressive pace on ageing soft tyres. Invicta repeatedly encouraged him to remain on track, believing that clear air would prove more valuable than rejoining in a pack of cars. The strategy worked perfectly.
While Câmara continued posting competitive lap times, Dunne found himself delayed by traffic, including Miyata, Bilinski and Maini. The lost time began to swing the race firmly in Invicta’s favour.
Overcut Delivers the Advantage
After extending his opening stint deep into the race, Câmara was finally called into the pits on Lap 22. His outstanding run on worn soft tyres came to an end. Still, the overcut had achieved its objective. Armed with fresher tyres, the Brazilian immediately began carving his way through the field. He overtook Beganovic before quickly catching Villagómez.
On Lap 25, Câmara swept past Villagómez down the main straight before continuing his charge forward. Two laps later he secured second place, reducing Dunne’s advantage to just 1.2 seconds.
The defining moment of the race arrived on Lap 30. Using DRS along the start-finish straight, Câmara surged past Dunne and reclaimed the lead he had surrendered at the start. Once clear, he wasted no time in building a gap. Within a single lap he had stretched his advantage to 2.5 seconds.
Tsolov Charges Through the Field
While Câmara escaped at the front, Tsolov’s alternative strategy came alive in spectacular fashion. The Campos Racing driver rapidly worked his way through the order. He first overtook Varrone for sixth place before producing an excellent move on Minì at the exit of Turn 10 to move into third. The Bulgarian’s charge did not stop there.
On Lap 35, Tsolov used his superior grip to sweep around the outside of Dunne at Turn 4, securing second place and completing one of the standout drives of the afternoon. Elsewhere, TRIDENT also enjoyed a strong finish, with Van Hoepen overtaking Beganovic for fifth place and Bennett moving ahead of León for seventh.
Câmara Dominates to the Flag
By the final lap, the outcome was beyond doubt. Câmara had pulled an astonishing 9.2 seconds clear of the chasing pack and comfortably controlled the closing stages. The Invicta Racing driver crossed the line to convert pole position into victory, capping off a superbly executed race that combined relentless pace with flawless strategic execution. Tsolov’s remarkable recovery drive earned him second place, while Dunne successfully resisted late pressure from Minì to secure the final podium position.
From pole position to the top step of the podium, Câmara’s victory was built on patience, pace and perfect strategy. The young Brazilian made it one of the most impressive Feature Race performances of the season and a lesson on tyre strategy.
