The Indy 500 has come and gone and the race once again proved exactly why it’s been coined ‘The Greatest Spectacle In Racing.’ 200 laps full of chaos, excitement and strategy all came together to create another remarkable event. Today, we’ll be breaking down some of the top moments from the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
A Historic Race Finish
The question on everyone’s minds going into last weekend was who will win the Indy 500? This year, it was Meyer Shank Racing’s own Felix Rosenqvist who took home the win and the honour of having his name etched into IndyCar history forever. The late-race restart had the biggest impact on the final results.
With only one lap to go after a red flag was thrown out, it truly could have been anyone’s win. After overtaking David Malukas on the last lap it was a constant battle to the finish line between the two drivers. Rosenqvist crossed the line with a margin of 0.0233 seconds. This marks the closest finish in Indy 500 history.
Katherine Legge Attempts “The Double”
Ahead of the race it was announced that Katherine Legge was going to attempt to compete in the Indy 500 and then fly to North Carolina to race in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. The feat is referred to as The Double and has only been attempted by six drivers, including Legge. Most recently, Kyle Larson had attempted The Double in 2024 and 2025. In 2024, rain prevented him from competing in the Coca-Cola 600. Last year, he failed to complete both races due to multi-car crashes in both events.
Legge unfortunately saw a similar fate during the Indy 500. A collision early on in the race prevented her from competing all 200 laps. Later on, she finished P31 in the Coca-Cola 600. The NASCAR race was shortened by rain but she was able to complete 361 out of the 373 laps.
Caio Collet’s Early Exit
Rookie driver Caio Collet had one of the most thrilling storylines of the weekend. After his qualifying results were disqualified, Collet started the race from 32nd on the grid. Collet managed to make his way up the leaderboard throughout the race and managed to lead up to nine laps at different parts of the race.
His race came to an early end on lap 193. With only seven laps to go, Collet lost traction in Turn 2. While he was trying to regain control Collet ended up hitting the outside wall. The fiery rash resulted in a red flag being brought out and led to the intense last-lap restart for the win.
Hélio Castroneves Continues to Make History
With 25 Indy 500 race starts, Hélio Castroneves is part of a select few number of drivers who have the most Indy 500 entries of all time. The only other drivers who have more Indy 500 starts than him include A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti and Al Unser. Castroneves has been on the hunt for a fifth Indy 500 win since his last one in 2021.
In his quest for success and a page in the Indy 500 history books, Castroneves has added one more record-reeling moment to his racing career. Despite having a mechanical issue that forced him out late in the race, he now holds the record as the all-time Indianapolis 500 mileage leader. The record was previously held by A..J Foyt who has 27 Indy 500 race starts.
The 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500 has been confirmed to take place on May 30, 2027.
