Fabio Di Giannantonio claimed victory in the MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix, ahead of Joan Mir and Fermín Aledguer. After being involved in a crash, and two restarts, Fabio Di Giannantonio showcased an impressive drive to secure the win in the Catalan Grand Prix.
Action Since the Start
The polesitter, Pedro Acosta, had an excellent launch, immediately taking off. Behind the KTM rider, Alex Márquez and Raul Fernández fought for second position. Meanwhile, Jorge Martín, with an aggressive move, moved up to fourth after dropping at the start.
Johann Zarco joined the fight at the front, fighting Álex Márquez for third relentlessly. While A. Márquez, Zarco, and Martín battled it out, the race leader and Fernández pulled a comfortable gap at the front.
On Lap 4, after Zarco forced A. Márquez wide, Martín capitalised and momentarily moved up to third. One lap later, Fernández overtook Acosta for the lead as Álex Márquez retook third position.
Further back, championship leader Marco Bezzecchi made up four positions, sitting in eighth. However, as the race progressed, the Aprilia rider dropped back to eleventh after going wide in Turn 10.
Awful Red Flag Midway
At the front, Acosta and Fernández pulled away, but Á. Márquez closed the gap quickly as he started chasing Fernández for second place. By Lap 10, the Gresini rider moved up to second, as Martín joined the lead group.
On Lap 12, Acosta suddenly began to fade, and just as Á. Márquez prepared to pass him into Turn 10, the Gresini rider was launched into a rapid‑fire crash that immediately triggered a red flag. In the chaos, Fabio Di Giannantonio was also caught out when a rebounding wheel clipped his bike, sending him tumbling into the gravel.
After Álex Márquez, fortunately conscious, was taken to the hospital for further examination, the Catalan Grand Prix had a quick start with 13 laps remaining.
Restart of the Catalan Grand Prix
On the restart, Acosta had a great launch as Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia crashed before Turn 1. And Zarco also went down, deploying a second red flag. This resulted in a second restart.
On the second restart, Acosta held position again as Martín overtook Fernández. However, in an attempt to overtake Martín, Raúl Fernández made contact with the Aprilia rider, who went to the gravel and rejoined last.
Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi started making positions, albeit slowly, as Joan Mir and Bagnaia moved up to second and third position, respectively. Fabio Di Giannantonio, the fastest rider on track, started chasing the Ducati rider for a podium position.
As Di Giannantonio moved up to third, Mir started chasing and attacking Acosta for the lead. However, the KTM rider remained ahead. With 5 laps remaining, Acosta was under pressure not only from Mir but also from Di Giannantonio.
In the end, Fabio Di Giannantonio crossed the finish line ahead of Joan Mir and Fermín Aldeguer. Pedro Acosta began to fade in the closing laps, and a touch with Ai Ogura put an end to his race before the chequered flag.
Looking Forward to Italy
After a MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix full of action, all eyes are set on the next round of the Championship: the Italian Grand Prix. With this win, Fabio Di Giannantonio closed the gap in the standings, retaking third as Marco Bezzecchi extended the gap on the lead.
