Jaguar TCS Racing has unveiled its next-generation development car, the Jaguar GEN4 proto_TYPE, in an unconventional test livery. The car will make its first public appearance later this month at the GEN4 Unleashed event at Circuit Paul Ricard, 21st – 22nd April. This marks an important milestone for the British team as it prepares for the next phase of electric racing. The team is using this moment to underline its ambition.

Livery Tells the Story of a Decade of Progress

The prototype’s distinctive livery is designed to do more than catch the eye. It maps simulated speed data from Jaguar’s four generations of Formula E cars around the iconic Monaco street circuit. In doing so, it shows the rapid evolution of performance since the team returned to the championship in 2016.

Each line on the livery represents a step forward in technology, efficiency and pace. The effect is both technical and symbolic. An artwork that shows how far Formula E has come in less than a decade while hinting at what’s still to come.

The numbers behind the GEN4 car point to a dramatic step change. Simulator runs suggest the car could reach up to 277km/h after exiting Monaco’s tunnel, a significant increase over current machinery. That is more than 30km/h faster than the current GEN3 Evo car and nearly 80km/h quicker than Jaguar’s original GEN1 entry.

These gains represent a fundamental shift in performance. As the GEN4 era is expected to redefine expectations of electric racing not only in terms of speed but also of technical capability.

Technology at the Heart of GEN4

The upcoming regulations for the 2026/27 season introduce significant improvements. For example, race power is projected to rise to 450kW, with 600kW available in qualifying and attack modes. In addition, permanent active all-wheel drive (AWD) will be featured for the first time in an open-wheel category. Enhanced regenerative braking of 700kW and new aerodynamic configurations will further push the limits of performance.

Crucially, teams like Jaguar will have greater freedom to develop key components in this new era of cars. This includes the powertrain, suspension systems and software, as well as new brake-by-wire technologies. In the end, it allows engineers to innovate more and strengthens the link between racing development and future production cars.

Team principal Ian James described the unveiling as a pivotal moment in Jaguar’s preparations. He underlined how excited the team was to present the GEN4 proto_TYPE as it gears up for “this exciting new era” of Formula E. Adding how the livery reflects both its history and “the huge technological and performance evolution through ten years of racing”.

Furthermore, he emphasised the role of the championship as a proving ground, calling it “the perfect platform” for Jaguar to remain at the forefront of EV innovation. The pace of the new cars, he suggested, underlines just how far the technology has advanced.

Innovation with Road Relevance

That focus on innovation extends beyond the circuit. Jack Lambert, Head of Technical Integration, highlighted the team’s long-standing objective to “race to innovate”. Further pointing to the GEN4 era as a major opportunity.

He noted that Jaguar continues to learn through developing its own competition powertrain, with each step forward feeding into future road cars. The broader development scope, he added, will help ensure Jaguar remains at the cutting edge of EV technology. Meaning what happens on track will not stay there; it will shape the next generation of Jaguar road cars.

Building Towards a Defining Chapter

Jaguar’s commitment to the GEN4 era, which runs through to 2030, ensures it remains a constant presence in Formula E’s evolution. With 25 wins and 33 podiums to date, including a Teams’ and Manufacturers’ title double in 2024, the team enters this new chapter from a position of strength. Yet the challenge ahead is significant. GEN4 promises to be the most transformative phase in the championship’s history, which comes with its own risks. For Jaguar, the prototype unveiled this week is a beginning to more innovation.
