With a history of over two decades, Shanghai is one of the most anticipated race weekends in the motorsport calendar. This year, China hosts the first Sprint Weekend of the season, which promises to be even more thrilling, with an extra 36 points on offer.

Enthusiasts from across the globe are expected to flock to the bustling city, eager to experience this exhilarating event. The unique combination of a challenging circuit and the fervent local fan base adds to the excitement, making it a must-watch for racing fanatics. As teams prepare to fine-tune their strategies, all eyes will be on Shanghai to see who will seize the opportunity to earn valuable championship points early in the season.

Championship Update

George Russell heads into the Chinese Grand Prix weekend at the top of the standings, 7 points ahead of his teammate. The Australian Grand Prix was an extremely strong start to the season for Mercedes.

Behind them sit Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, a much better start to the year compared to the 2025 season. It is certainly looking like it could be another Mercedes vs. Ferrari in China. Lando Norris and Max Verstappen will also be looking to improve on last week’s positions.

Chinese GP History

First introduced in the 2004 season, fans quickly embraced Shanghai as a favourite on the modern race calendar. Even after a four-year cancellation due to COVID-19, the event made its much-anticipated return in 2024.

Last year’s winner, Oscar Piastri, will be looking to make an impression after he did not start last weekend’s race. In the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, he spectacularly finished first, 9.748s ahead of his teammate.

Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello won its inaugural race, and in 2006, it was where Michael Schumacher claimed his final Grand Prix win. Schumacher also holds the track record here in China; he set the fastest lap of 1:32.238 in 2004.

Lewis Hamilton is the driver with the most wins at this circuit; he has won 4 times with Mercedes and twice with McLaren. Will he be able to add another to his list with Ferrari this weekend?

A Closer Look at the Circuit…

With just a single session to familiarise themselves with the track this weekend, perfecting the strategy during Free Practice 1 could be key.

The tyres that Pirelli is providing this weekend are the C2, C3, and C4. These are one step harder than those utilised in Melbourne last weekend. Given it is a Sprint Weekend, teams will need to better manage their tyre allocation as well.

The cooler weather could also affect how the tyres work over the weekend. With the warmest day being Saturday, showing highs of 15°c, it will be interesting to see track conditions developing compared to Melbourne.

The Shanghai International Circuit was resurfaced in August 2024, with the fresh asphalt providing grip and resulting in quicker lap times. However, the smoother surface also led to tyre graining during the 2025 race weekend.

Twelve months later, the track surface is expected to have matured somewhat. The opening track sessions will give teams their first indication of how the surface has evolved.

At 305.066 km, the Shanghai International Circuit features a challenging 16-corner layout. The lap starts with tightening Turns 1 and 2, a long right-hander that puts pressure on the front tyres and affects tyre wear, calling for precise strategies.

One of the defining features of the track is the 1.2 km straight between Turns 13 and 14, one of the longest on the Formula One calendar. It offers one of the best overtaking opportunities of the lap, with heavy braking at the end often leading to wheel-to-wheel action.

This mix of technical corners and long straights defines the race weekend, requiring teams to balance straight-line speed and downforce. Managing front tyres, especially in the opening sector, is crucial for maintaining performance.

Conclusion

As the championship begins, all eyes will be on whether Mercedes can carry their strong form from Melbourne into Shanghai, or if another team will come out on top. Fans can definitely expect an exciting weekend as the 2026 season continues to unfold.
