The season opener in Australia has promised action and drama, and it delivers on those promises. The atmosphere is charged, and excitement has grown over the weekend. It’s time for the feature race after the hectic weekend of free practice, qualifying, and the highly debated sprint race incident.
High Hopes & Last-Minute Calls
Fans were notified prior to the formation lap that only 28 drivers were anticipated to compete in Round 1 of the Australian Grand Prix after Louis Sharp and James Wharton withdrew from the event due to their incident during the sprint race.
High expectations were with everyone watching Del Pino and Ugochukwu. Despite Ugochukwu’s fast pace throughout the weekend and his little qualifying error, he managed to maintain his lead, but Del Pino emerged victorious in the sprint race for the first time this season.
Start Line Mayhem
Nael lost the lead to Ugochukwu right away after the race was green flagged, but Slater also got off to a strong start and began a three-way fight. Slater takes P2 from Ugochukwu as Nael regains the lead in the close battle. Due to a puncture, Garfias, the lone Prema in the race, went into the pit lane and dropped to last. A fierce battle between Stromsted, Kato, and Del Pino saw constant position swaps.
DNF’s Multiply & a Safety Car Deployed
The first DNF of the race occurred on lap 2 as Le went into the pit to retire the vehicle. After passing Lacorte for P5, Badoer lost to Stromsted, and Colnaghi dropped him to P8. The fighting continued, but Badoer narrowly missed the final corner after spinning in the last bend and catching some grass. He was still in the race but slipped to P11.
At turn 12, Bhirombhakdi slid through the gravel and into the wall, adding another DNF, and a moment later, a yellow flag turned into the safety car being deployed for laps 9–12.
Back on Track With Time Penalties
Returning to green, Ugochukwu maintained his lead, followed closely by Nael and Slater. Lacorte put Gladysz in a defensive stance by filling up his mirrors, using DRS to complete the overtake on Gladysz for P4.
While Colnaghi was defending against Del Pino for P8, race control started looking into Lacorte and Nael for a false start. In conclusion, each was given five-second penalties for the incidents. Benavidas overtook Nakamura for P11 as he continued his stealthy ascent through the ranks. Garfias was having a hard day as he returned to the race after making another trip through the gravel.
Edge of Defending
Slater lost P3 to Lacorte on Lap 15 as Gladysz, Stromsted, and Kato closed in. Despite his best efforts, Gladysz lost ground against Stromsted and Kato. Lacorte and Stromsted collide, damaging Lacorte’s front wing and creating additional chaos in the race. The aggressive defending from Stromsted earns him a 10 second penalty from race control.
With other drivers ahead of him battling with time penalties, Benevidas had risen to P10, and more points were anticipated. A brief yellow flag occurred on lap 20 after Badoer and Del Palo made mild contact, spinning Del Palo, who was able to regain control and rejoin.
Safety Car Seals the Victory
Slater closed in on Nael, managing to take P2 before the safety car deployed. Shin ended up in the barriers of turn 6, possibly as a result of Del Palo’s slow rejoin and it’s another DNF as Shin exits the car.
Ugochukwu won the season’s opening race, followed by Slater and Nael, after completing the last laps under the safety car. However, after a dramatic race full of fierce clashes, we conclude Round 1 in Australia with Ugochukwu P1, Slater P2, and Kato making up P3 after the time penalties.
