After speculation of Honda leaving IndyCar, they have confirmed a multiyear commitment from Chevrolet and Honda. They will continue on as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of IndyCar and the NTT IndyCar Series.

Each manufacturer will also be heavily involved in development. They will have involvement in the engine and competition rules in the new NTT IndyCar Series car. This is expected to begin competition in 2028.

Powering IndyCar

Chevrolet is currently a nine-time champion since returning to IndyCar in 2012. Including their wins from 1988 to 1993 and 2002, they have won 16 total IndyCar Series manufacturer championships.

Honda has been a continuous fixture on IndyCar grids since 1994. They have been an engine supplier for over 30 years. This includes six seasons as the sole supplier. The 2025 NTT IndyCar Series season marked its 11th manufacturers’ title in multiple manufacturers competition and the fifth in the last eight years.

In addition to commitments above, each manufacturer will be entitled to own a charter to be utilized beginning with the 2028 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.

“This is a monumental day for INDYCAR, fuelled by a massive and historic commitment from two of our best and most trusted partners,” IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles said.

Charter System

The charter system was announced in September 2024, and from 2025, each team was awarded a maximum of three chartered entries. Any team with three charters will not be eligible to utilise a fourth via an OEM. Complete details of the powertrain parameters to be utilised will be announced at a later date.

The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season begins Sunday, March 1 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. With Honda and Chevrolet continuing their relationship, the future is looking positive for the series. Full details of the parameters will be released, but this marks the start of the next IndyCar era.
