Jake Hughes joins Mahindra Racing for a reserve role

After the departure of Maserati MSG Racing from Formula E, Jake Hughes found himself without a seat. But Mahindra Racing saw the potential of the British driver and offered him a role.

Mahindra Racing announced it this morning : Jake Hughes is back in Formula E. The Britt, who was left without a seat in 2026 after three seasons, is now the reserve and simulator driver for the Indian team. He will share his role with Kush Maini, still in Formula 2.

During his time in Formula E, the 31-year-old claimed four pole positions and secured two podium finishes. He is highly regarded for his technical feedback and development capability. Jake Hughes has performed test and development roles across both Formula 1 and Formula E, working with McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin in F1, and Mercedes EQ and Maserati MSG in Formula E.

Jake Hughes declared I’m excited to begin this next chapter in my Formula E career with Mahindra Racing. What they have built over the past few seasons is very impressive. It’s clear that the team is on a really positive trajectory. I’m looking forward to playing my part and helping to move this team – which is one of the championship’s iconic names – back towards the front of the grid. With their two reserve drivers, Mahindra Racing will be providing critical support to Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara. The team will also continues the development of the new M12Electro.
