Since joining the grid in Season 6, Porsche has become a significant addition to the all-electric series. Achieving both the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships, Porsche is one of the most successful units on the grid.
Yesterday, Porsche Motorsports announced their commitment to a second licence for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, starting from the 2026/27 season.
What Does This Mean for Porsche?
Porsche acquiring a second licence provides them with the green light to introduce a second team under their name in Formula E’s next adventure. With the Gen4 Era slowly approaching, this plays an important role in their development, with their drivers as well as behind the scenes.
When asked about the exciting opportunity, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, Thomas Laudenbach, highlighted their goals and commitments moving forward.
”It also gives us the opportunity to further develop technical solutions that are relevant to our production sports cars. Among other things, we want to use this adaptation to find and promote new talent at all levels, not just drivers.”
An Advantage to Porsche, an Idea for the Grid?
A new team provides Porsche with an advantage. Not only will two new drivers be able to showcase their talents in such a competitive sport, but the data that they extract from the car will be equally as crucial. There is excitement surrounding who will vacate these seats, as fan speculation on social media has started. With the growing talent in the motorsport space, Porsche will be adamant about choosing the best fit for their second team.
This can be considered a power play move from Porsche — extracting double the amount of data compared to their competitors may be the difference between a championship win and second place. With the freedom to experiment under different settings in a variety of conditions, Porsche will be better prepared for race days.
With the second team’s debut season falling at the same time as the beginning of the Gen4 Era, eyes will be on Porsche to see how they perform.
Porsche and Their Power Unit
The future of Porsche in Formula E is long-term. Starting from the 2026/27 season, Porsche will have the largest presence in the paddock. They will have four cars across two teams racing under their power unit and will stick with at least one customer team. Their commitment to Formula E was praised by Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula,
“The commitment by Porsche to acquire an additional licence from Season 13 (2026/27) of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship demonstrates significant strength in our series and its dedication to innovation and electrification at the pinnacle of motorsport.”
