One of the defining moments of his year came in May, when he narrowly failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Rather than accept a potential technical route into the field amid the Penske eligibility controversy, Abel declined on principle. He insisted he wanted to earn his place on merit. Though maybe his pace and racecraft still have potential to grow, Abel’s composure and mental maturity suggest a solid foundation for long-term growth within the series.

Louis Foster: Consistency That Counts

Few rookies entered the 2025 season with higher expectations than Louis Foster. Fresh from a dominant Indy NXT title campaign in 2024 — featuring eight wins, seven poles and twelve podiums — the British driver joined Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing eager to prove that form would translate to the premier category.

Foster’s rookie year did not disappoint. He claimed his maiden pole position at the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America, edging out reigning champion Alex Palou in qualifying. This was a breakthrough that confirmed his raw speed at this level. Over the course of the season he produced five Top 10 starts and consistently brought home points, finishing with 213 overall to secure the official Rookie of the Year title by a narrow margin.

The campaign was not without its missteps. Three retirements, all due to contact, underscored the need for greater patience in wheel-to-wheel combat. Yet considering his team’s position outside IndyCar’s “big three”, Foster’s results were deeply impressive. He showed he was capable of a competitive qualifying pace and adaptability.

Robert Shwartzman: The Breakout Star of Indy

For the former Ferrari Driver Academy driver, Robert Shwartzman, and 2021 FIA Formula 2 runner-up, IndyCar represented a totally new adventure. Averaging 232.790 mph, he became the first rookie to start from pole at the “500” since 1983 and delivered PREMA the first rookie-team pole since 1984. The achievement sent shockwaves through the series and cemented his name as one to watch.

Beyond that headline result, however, his rookie campaign was mixed. He finished the year with 211 points, just two shy of Foster, and recorded two Top 10 finishes alongside several DNFs. As a new team, they showed a lack of oval experience that made the opening rounds a steep education. As the team looks towards 2026, its future remains uncertain amid ongoing discussions over budget and programme scope. Should PREMA secure the necessary backing, its potential for rapid advancement could make it one of the most exciting stories on next year’s grid.

On paper, Foster’s claim to Rookie of the Year is undeniable. He scored the most points, achieved a pole position and demonstrated the most consistent season-long performance. Yet numbers alone do not tell the full season story.

Foster’s consistent performance definitely contrasts Shwartzman’s high-risk, high-reward style. A risk that produced both spectacular peaks and costly lows for the PREMA rookie. Meanwhile, Abel, who may not have matched their raw statistics, suggests being a driver building for the long haul.
