Another spellbinding sprint has been delivered at the Algarve International Circuit, where Álex Márquez has emerged victorious in a breathtaking Portimão Sprint race. The rider outmuscled Pedro Acosta and pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi in a fierce three-way battle that kept everyone on edge until the final seconds.

A Fierce Fight Off The Bat

Bezzecchi lines up on pole after a commanding qualifying session, joined on the front row by Acosta and Fabio Quartararo. Márquez, despite looking like the man to beat on Friday, starts from fifth after a late crash in Q2.

As the lights go out, Bezzecchi leads confidently through Turn 1, with Acosta and Márquez slotting in close behind. But the calm of the opening lap quickly gives way to chaos — Acosta attacks for the lead on lap three, diving beneath Bezzecchi at Turn 5 in a move that underlines his growing authority.

Márquez, who had demonstrated race-winning pace all weekend, shadowed the young rider relentlessly. Each time the Spaniard drew alongside on the main straight, Acosta countered immediately, using every inch of the circuit to defend.

Márquez Makes It Count

The decisive moment came with four laps to go. Márquez finally found a way through, launching a perfectly timed attack at Turn 1. This time, Acosta couldn’t respond. Despite the rider’s last-lap surge, the former held firm, with the top three separated by less than half a second at the flag.

Bezzecchi completes the podium after losing touch with the lead duo in the closing stages. Although the Aprilia star couldn’t convert pole into victory, his third place proves crucial in the battle for third overall in the world championship.

A Tough Debut For Bulega

WorldSBK title runner-up Nicolo Bulega makes his MotoGP debut this weekend as Marc Márquez’s stand-in at Ducati. The Italian’s race ended prematurely on lap five after a front-end crash at Turn 13, though he escaped unhurt. Joan Mir also fails to make the finish, forced to retire after a technical issue at the start.

Raúl Fernández, who had dislocated his shoulder in a heavy Friday crash, was ruled out for the rest of the weekend, while Somkiat Chantra was the only rider to deviate from the common hard-front, soft-rear tyre selection, opting instead for a medium compound front.

All Eyes On The Race

With Márquez already secure in second place in the overall championship, attention turns fully to the fight for third. Bezzecchi’s podium gives him a firmer hold on the position, but with Bagnaia and Acosta still mathematically in play, it’s anyone’s guess.
