For the 12th season, Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E kept their driver lineup the same. Although whilst the Gen3Evo cars were out for preseason testing, an exciting announcement was made. Mark Preston has been appointed Team Principal of Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E.

What This Means for Lola Yamaha ABT

Season 11 was a hard one for Lola Yamaha ABT, finishing last in the driver’s championship. Despite their efforts, the car was not maximised to its true potential. However, with the appointment of Preston as a team principal, his pedigree in motorsports leaves the team in good hands.

His work with DS Techeetah will remain one for the history books. Preston guided multiple drivers to success and aided in the victories behind teams’ championships. He expressed that he will now will be eager to replicate this with his new team.

Lola Re-Enter Into the World of Motorsports

In 2024, Lola Cars announced their interest in returning to the world of motorsports. The motorsport brand has many championship wins behind its name therefore, its partnership with Yamaha and ABT will promote opportunities to develop the powertrain. Already working with Lola Cars for 2 years as a Motorsports Director, paddock talks suggest this partnership is down to Preston. Preston shared his excitement about the partnership,

”We are thrilled to confirm our entry in Formula E. For us, this is more than just an opportunity to return Lola to the track, it’s also a fantastic platform for technological development.”

What’s in Their Future?

Fans saw an improvement over Season 11, unifying the team with their goals and building a car that has potential. With the Gen4 car making its entry next season, Lola Yamaha ABT will use Season 12 as its development year. With the most established team principal in their paddock, the odds are looking in their favour. Preston’s extensive research into the background of Formula E will be showcased in his ability to strategise, something Lola Yamaha will benefit from.

Outside of the development of the car, the respect and relationship building with the team have already been embedded.

When asked about his plans for the team, Preston answered,

”After a summer focused on development, I’m looking forward to leading the Lola Yamaha ABT team as we enter our second season, continuing to work closely alongside both Thoman and Fred as we build on the progress made in Season 11.”

Motorsports in the modern day means exposure, and Preston can gift this to the team. With his background, not only in Formula E but Formula 1, Preston can close the deal with sponsors that will help Lola move forward.
