Marc Márquez has been crowned the first MotoGP Tissot Sprint winner at Balaton Park Circuit. Fabio Di Giannantonio inherited second place after an early race incident, with his VR46 teammate finishing in third. This win also added a thirteenth first-place medal to the #93 rider’s collection. While it may not have been an unlucky number for M. Márquez, misfortune plagued several of the riders. Read on to find out how the chaos and drama unfolded.
Gearing Up on the Grid for 13 Laps
Twenty minutes before the event, riders took to their sighting laps as the teams set up on the main straight to make any necessary adjustments. After placing at the top of the timesheet in the FP2 session and securing pole position in Qualifying, M. Márquez looked poised to take his thirteenth Sprint win this year.
Joining him on the front row were Marco Bezzecchi and Di Giannantonio, both advancing from Q1 to Q2 with impressive lap times. At the back of the grid, Francesco Bagnaia started in fifteenth position, making it his worst qualifying result since the 2022 Portuguese Grand Prix.
Tight Technical First Turn Results in Quartararo Crash
The pinch turn at the end of the main straight was always going to be a tight squeeze as the Sprint race began. Fabio Quartararo darted off to the inside line immediately at the start but got it all wrong as he crashed into Enea Bastianini. Bezzechi was also caught up trying to avoid the incident, losing his position in the top three.
Whether Bastianini had suffered damage from this incident or had forced an error of his own, it was only a minute later that he took out Johann Zarco. FIM stewards announced that both incidents were to be reviewed after the race, with possible penalties to be imposed.
Back of the Pack Struggles
Brad Binder, after a horror start, came into the pit lane to get the KTM bike fairing replaced, possibly damaged from contact. At Turn 11, Pedro Acosta slid off into the gravel in an effort to pass Jorge Martín. The #37 rejoined the race a short time later, but it was an awful race for the KTM teams. Alex Rins was handed a long lap penalty for taking a shortcut through one of the chicanes. Despite all this, Bagnaia had only been able to move up two places to thirteenth.
HRC Honda Moving Forward as Design Changes Pay Off
While the top three riders were all on Ducati machines, the most impressive rides from the day came from Luca Marini and Joan Mir. Since Friday, the HRC Honda team’s changes to the bikes’ framework have clearly paid off. Marini finished in a career-best Sprint result in fourth, while Mir secured sixth.
Top Nine in the Tissot Sprint
Here are the top nine point scorers of the MotoGP Tissot Sprint Race:
Usually, after a Saturday Tissot Sprint race, we see the grid reset to its original qualifying positions for the main race on Sunday. However, the Hungarian GP has been amping up the drama as both Miller and Á. Márquez were handed a three-place grid penalty after the Practice session incident. With this grid reshuffle, it will be interesting to see who will use it to their advantage. But is it enough to catch M. Márquez and steal away the title of winning the inaugural Hungarian GP at Balaton Park Circuit? What we do know is that the stage is set for more chaos in the main race.
