At 19 years old, McLaren Development Driver Ella Lloyd has traveled the world of motorsports from Formula 4 to F1 Academy. In an exclusive interview with The Girls Who Motorsport, Lloyd spoke about the importance of patience behind the wheel. She explained the impact of inclusiveness and opportunities ahead of the Berlin Rookie Test.
On Returning to Gen-3
After her participation in the All-Women’s Test back in November, Ella Lloyd geared up for her second stint in Formula E car. This time in a the Gen3 car.
“I’m obviously excited to be back with the team,” she shared.
“It was an amazing experience when I first drove the car. Now that I’ve had a little taste of it, I think I can push a bit more.”
Lloyd’s journey in motorsports began in 2022 and her participation in the All-Women’s Test marked a pivotal moment of her career. The test showcased the growth of inclusivity in Formula E. Her return for the Berlin Rookie Test highlights just how fast she continues to climb the ranks. The Formula E all-women’s test is part of a broader initiative to increase female representation in motorsport. A cause that hits close to home.
“It’s an amazing opportunity… to be given the same opportunities as the males. It gives you a chance to show what you’re capable of without going into a full season.”
On Her Racing Tenure
Currently competing in F4 and F1 Academy Lloyd acknowledged the precision and attention to detail that comes with racing for a world-class team like McLaren.
“The level is quite a lot lower [in my series],” she said.
“Being able to step up and work with the engineers, the drivers, and everyone involved in the team is amazing.”
From observing debriefs to taking in data feedback from experienced engineers. Lloyd is presenting herself with opportunities to learn lessons on and off track. She’s soaking in everything like a sponge and applying it to her performance. It’s this hands-on exposure, she says, that truly accelerates learning.

If given a wildcard Formula E race seat, Ella already has a favorite in mind: Berlin. “Yeah, I think I’d like to race at this track [Berlin],” she admitted.
A Mindset Race
While juggling multiple ambitions on and off track, it’s easy to feel lost. It’s the wisdom that helps her stay steadfast on her journey. The best piece of advice she received was quite simple:
“Patience. Especially while driving the car. And I think any opportunity that comes your way, grab it with both hands.”
Having started racing at 16, Lloyd admits she doesn’t have too many regrets — but if she could tell her younger self one thing, it would be simple:
“Just give any opportunity a go. I think I did that pretty well when I was younger.”
Ella Lloyd is the name to remember as the years progress. With multiple wins in F1 Academy and two Formula E tests, doors continue to open for the British driver as she shares her talent with the world.
