With just three races remaining in the 2025 IndyCar season, the championship battle is down to two contenders: Álex Palou and Pato O’Ward. Palou, already on eight wins for the year, leads the standings by 121 points over O’Ward, with only 162 points still available.
In what has become a fierce hunt for the Astor Cup, with up to 54 points per weekend up for grabs, one bad result at Portland could make or break a championship run.
Portland International Raceway – Track Overview
Located in Portland, Oregon, the 1.964-mile (3.166 km) circuit features 12 turns on a flat, permanent layout.
Highlights include a tight chicane at the end of the front straight, the heavy braking into Turn 7, and the three-corner sweep back onto the main straight; all key overtaking zones for drivers deploying hybrid assist and Push‑to‑Pass.
Portland is known for tight racing and tricky handling transitions, where maintaining momentum out of slower corners can decide your weekend.
The race will run for 110 laps, totalling 347 km.
Championship down to Palou and O’Ward
Álex Palou, with eight wins in 2025, leads the standings and knows every point counts. His Portland resume is impressive—two wins and a runner-up. If Palou manages a clean race, he could clinch the championship this weekend.
“It’s not done. We still need to win it. We still need to keep our heads down,” he shared after his Laguna Seca victory.
Pato O’Ward remains the only driver within mathematical reach. He’ll need maximum points in both Portland and beyond—and a Palou stumble—to keep the season alive. With up to 162 points remaining after this round, O’Ward’s hopes hang in the balance.
“It’s a tall task, but still mathematically possible. We’re going to keep pushing… it’s racing. You never know,” he said.
The Questions that Remain
Can Palou make the title official? If O’Ward finishes worse than 15th and Palou scores minimal points, the championship could be wrapped up.
Is O’Ward bold enough? He must win, lead the most laps, and secure maximum points while hoping Palou falters.
Who else could matter? Scott Dixon and Kyle Kirkwood remain on the fringes mathematically but are realistically out of reach since both trail by 170+ points; regardless, the drivers will continue to fight for third place in the championship.
