Saturday Shaken by Fog and Frustration
With Free Practice 2 cancelled due to thick coastal fog, teams went into qualifying with minimal data. Only one practice session earlier in the day left little room for error and plenty of room for tension.
Round 1: Palou Recovers, McLaughlin Misses Out
In Group 1, Alex Palou spun off late in the session but recovered quickly to set the fastest lap at 1:08.665. He led Rosenqvist, Rasmussen, Lundgaard, Herta, and Newgarden into Round 2.
Scott McLaughlin just missed the cut, finishing 7th and expressing frustration despite progress made overnight.
Group 2 was slower overall. Pato O’Ward topped it with a 1:09.079 ahead of Marcus Armstrong, Christian Lundgaard, Will Power, David Malukas, and Graham Rahal rounding out the top six.
Round 2: Tire Gambles & Last-Second Drama
Rahal, Power, Herta and Malukas opted for soft tires, while the others ran hards. It raised the question: could Sunday’s race become a red tire affair? Unlikely, but not impossible.
With 20 seconds left on the clock, Rosenqvist ran off at Turn 5, eliminating his Fast Six chances. Palou stayed on top with a 1:08.594, ahead of Herta and O’Ward. Malukas, Newgarden and Power completed the top six.
Herta complained about traffic ruining his final attempt. Rosenqvist admitted his mistake had cost him a place in the shootout.
Fast Six: Palou Nails It, Herta Fades
With low fuel and fresh softs, the final six pushed to the edge. Palou delivered under pressure once again, clocking a 1:08.341 and grabbing his fourth pole of the season.
O’Ward followed in second with an impressive lap. Herta had the pace but couldn’t improve late in the run, finishing third. Newgarden secured fourth with a solid showing, ahead of Power and Malukas.
Fast Six Results:
- Palou – 1:08.341
- O’Ward – 1:08.627
- Herta – 1:09.407
- Newgarden – 1:09.669
- Power – 1:10.006
- Malukas – 1:10.181
Championship Watch: Advantage Palou
Despite the dominant pole, Palou cannot wrap up the title this weekend. But with a 99-point cushion over O’Ward, he’s inching closer to his fourth IndyCar crown. For O’Ward, Sunday is a must-win to keep the fight alive.
High tire degradation and the unknowns of a shortened weekend mean strategy could play a huge role tomorrow.
Will Palou continue his march to the title, or can O’Ward fight back at Laguna Seca?
