Moto2 Championship Lead Tiebreak Broken in Mugello

2–3 minutes

Manuel González defied the odds to storm back to the front and crowned a Moto2 Grand Prix winner in Italy. Fellow Spanish riders Albert Arenas joined him in second and Arón Canet in third. González is now the outright leader with 9 points in front.

Starting Grid Shake-Up

No further action was taken after the incident involving Filip Salač, Diogo Moreira, and Marcos Ramírez during the qualifying session. However, González was given a three-grid place penalty for slow riding in front of Deniz Öncü in the same session. He was demoted from fifth to eighth on the grid to start.

First Lap Overtakes

The 19-lap race began spectacularly with Öncü weaving behind and around Canet, while Gonzalez followed past in the first corner. Arenas and Moreira also lost their positions as a result of this strategy.

Penalty Served

Daniel Holgado served his long-lap penalty as soon as he could, carried over from his clash with teammate David Alonso in Aragón. It was a served quickly, but he struggled to keep up with the rest of the riders at the back of the grid and barely managed to score points.

Tyre Management Begins

With a scorching heat of nearly 50°C on the Italian circuit, the leading group did what they could to ease the burden on their tyres. The only rider on the medium front, Salač, worked fast to get himself up to fifth. But it was short-lived as he dropped down near the tail end of the point scorers.

Crash on Lap 9

Jorge Navarro lost his grip through sector one, causing the yellow flags to come out briefly as the track was cleared. Thankfully, Navarro was up and walking away from the accident but unable to continue. However, Eric Fernández, a recent addition to MSi Racing after they parted ways with Sergio García, was penalised for overtaking under a yellow flag condition.

González Breaks Ahead

After several laps battling with Arenas, González started to pull ahead, creating a growing gap between himself and second place. Canet and Moreira had already fallen over two seconds behind the race leader and could not set lap times in the 1:55s.

Third-Place Podium Battle

While the prospect of getting pole position faded into the distance, Canet and Moreira set their sights on securing third place. Throughout the final laps, the Spanish and Brazilian riders swapped places several times, allowing Celestino Vietti to catch up and find himself in third-place contention. The three were split by nearly two-tenths of a second at the finish line, with Canet clinching the coveted spot and keeping himself close behind González in the championship points.

Gearing Up For Next Weekend

The second half of the first series of back-to-back race weekends this season will take place at the TT Assen Circuit in the Netherlands. Last year’s winner, Ai Ogura, furthered his Moto2 World Championship lead and has reaped the rewards in his rookie MotoGP season this year. Canet shared in the post-race interview that he viewed the Mugello race as a test for things to come. The Moto2 World Champion is not yet set in stone.
