The Moto3 race at Mugello delivered another absolute classic race. A chaotic, edge-of-your-seat thriller packed with overtakes, crashes, and an ever-changing lead group. From the opening lap to the final sprint down the straight, the action never stopped.
Carpe Stuns in Qualifying
The surprise started, when Álvaro Carpe shocked the grid by snatching his first-ever pole position. A spectacular final-lap overtake on Ángel Piqueras that left the field stunned. Carpe’s momentum carried into Sunday’s race, where he made a clean launch and confidently held the lead on lap one.
Early Drama Unfolds
Pressure came early from Scott Ogden and José Antonio Rueda, but it was David Almansa who stole the spotlight at the start. The Spaniard launched superbly from the second row and muscled his way into the lead with a bold move at Turn 1. But his dream was short-lived — a crash just one lap later ended any hopes of a maiden Moto3 victory.
Slipstream Mayhem Down the Mugello Straight
With Almansa out, the race evolved into a textbook Mugello slipstream battle. The lead changed hands constantly as the riders fanned out six-wide down the long straight, using every inch of tarmac — and sometimes more. Carpe, Piqueras, Adrián Quiles, Rueda, and Valentín Perrone were all in the mix.
Perrone’s performance was particularly eye-catching. After being sent to the back of the grid due to a qualifying penalty, the Argentinian carved his way through the field with surgical precision, eventually hitting the front in spectacular fashion.
Mid-Race Collision Shakes the Lead
As the race entered its midpoint, a key flashpoint arrived on Lap 10. Contact between David Muñoz and Adrián Fernández caused a dramatic crash that also took down a fast-charging rival, blowing the lead group wide open. The incident reshuffled the order and disrupted the rhythm just as the front pack had settled into a groove.
Veterans and Rookies Battle for Control
With chaos behind them, Dennis Foggia, Carpe, and Quiles began a new phase of battle. Foggia, one of the more experienced rider in the group, timed his move perfectly — slicing through the group on Lap 11 to take control. It was not certain, as Tatsuki Suzuki, Taiyo Furusato, and others joined the melee in the closing laps.
Each corner became a new gamble for the riders, as positions were changed under braking and through switchbacks. Perrone briefly led, then Quiles surged again, and Carpe too refused to back down.
The Final Lap Shootout
By Lap 15, five riders were still in the fight for the win: Carpe, Quiles, Foggia, Furusato, and Perrone. The final two laps were pure Moto3 chaos and packed with bold overtakes, desperate dives, and perfectly timed cutbacks.
Carpe led into the final round and attempted to stretch the field. But Foggia, struck back at Turn 1 with a stunning outside-in move to retake the lead. From there, he defended flawlessly, closing every door and withstanding one last charge into the final corners.
Foggia Edges Carpe in Breathtaking Finish
In a finish worthy of a postcard, Foggia crossed the line just ahead of Carpe and Furusato, claiming a hard-fought and richly deserved victory. Carpe’s wait for a win goes on — but the young Spaniard’s performance confirmed he’s a serious contender.
Once again, Mugello delivered one of the races of the season — a reminder of why this legendary Italian circuit remains a crown jewel of the MotoGP calendar.
