1–2 minutes

Today’s qualifying at World Wide Technology Raceway inverted the grid based on championship standings, throwing drivers into a four-lap shootout: two warm-up lap, then two flying laps to set an average speed. The second lap nearly always delivered the fastest times as drivers adjusted to the track’s demands and the nerves settled. With conditions warm and grip building, mistakes were costly and precision made all the difference.

Penske reigns supreme

Will Power in the No 12 Penske Chevrolet topped the session, averaging 180.329 mph to claim a record-breaking 71st career pole. “It’s been a while… Oh man, we also have to win here,” Power said, signaling he’s party-ready under the lights.

McLaughlin and Malukas close behind

Scott McLaughlin, also of Team Penske, delivered a strong average at 179.783 mph, while David Malukas (Meyer Shank Racing) posted 179.079 mph, his second lap “perfect” he said. Together they reinforced Penske’s oval strength after their pace in FP1.

Championship contenders stay sharp

Álex Palou (178.381 mph) held his own in P3 overall, maintaining his lead in the standings. Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward wasn’t far behind in third fastest, staying in the hunt.

Ericsson resurfaces in the top ten

Marcus Ericsson, bouncing back from his India penalty, secured a top-ten result and a fast-lap boost averaging 177.405 mph. Conor Daly praised: “The Penske cars are the one to beat.”

What to watch for tonight

With Penske locked into front-row strength, all eyes are on Power to convert pole into victory. McLaughlin and Malukas will be hungry to challenge. Can Palou extend his championship momentum? Will Ericsson’s comeback continue under the St. Louis lights?

Final word: Pole sets the tone but in oval racing, the true test comes after the green flag. Brace for a high-octane primetime spectacle.

Next up: The Bommarito 500 race under the lights, let’s see who takes the heat from qualifying into race glory.
