As the high hopes and expectations for Round 4 of F1 Academy in Montreal sank in, we were greeted by sunny weather and a clear sky after the free practice.
Early Contenders and First Flying Laps
Alisha Pomowski is likely to take the lead, so it’s too soon to rule out Maya Weug, Chloe Chambers, or Dorianne Pin. You can observe the difference in Weug’s pace compared to free practice after certain electrical adjustments were made to her car. This allows her to gain true understanding of the Montreal circuit. After Weug completes a strong lap, she briefly sits in P1 before Block knocks her down. That is, until Chambers completed her first lap, sitting comfortably at the top.
Mid-Session Drama and Time Improvements
After recovering from a lockup that disrupted her flying lap, Larsen’s sector 2 went from yellow to green. With twenty-two minutes left, Havrda spins but swiftly corrects herself, requiring her to stop her lap. Palmowski finished in P1 with a lap time of 1:40.101, while Block was in P3 and Lloyd was sitting in P2 with green sectors in her lap. Ferreira has demonstrated her abilities by jumping up to P3 with a respectable lap time of 1:39.645, but Larsen is currently the fastest, taking P1, while Palmowski’s lap time was erased due to a minor overcorrection. Even though Block had purple sectors, she didn’t finish the lap, and Larsen was flying down the circuit and maintaining P1.
Track Battles and Grip Challenges
With seventeen minutes left, the slight struggle for grip is evident as Pin was out on the track with Hausmann and Gademan to complete their first lap. Hausmann is in P12, and Gademan is in P7. Gademan enters the run-off with an incomplete good lap, and Ferreira sits in P4 on another out lap. Chambers has moved up to P2, while Pin has claimed P3 from Block.
With 12 minutes left, Larsen’s best time of 1:39.552 takes P1, and we see Gademan jump up just as Pin completes her lap. Chambers comes close to contact with wildcard entry Mathilda Paatz. In spite of this, Chambers moves quicker, taking P1, pushing her teammate and rival into P2, and Larsen into P4, while Pin moves up to third.
Late-Session Purple Sectors
With a timing of 1:39.089, Chambers had another purple sector. Larsen was out for another lap, while Weug entered the pitlane to continue working on the car. Palmowski’s quickest lap time was 1:38.749, while Llyod had a little slip. With eight minutes left, Ferreira put in a green lap as Felbermayr leapt to P11. Pin was on another lap when Chambers, by the narrowest of margins, grabbed P1 from Palmowski. Hausmann climbed to fourth place, but Lloyd’s faster lap earns her the position. Nobel rose to P7, Chong jumped to P10, and Weug rejoined the track. Chambers’ purple lap retook P1 with the fastest time of 1:38.125. With four minutes left in qualifying, Gademan moved into P5, while Pin grabbed P2 and Lloyd retook P4.
Final Qualifying Results and Notable Moments
On this track, it’s evident that current leader Maya Weug was having trouble with the car, and it’s feasible to see the standings shifting this weekend. Ciconte advanced to P11, but Chong’s lap altered the course of the race by taking on P11. Paatz put in a strong lap, climbing to P14 ahead of Weug, and Block had yet another big lockup. Ferreira zoomed across the run-off while Crone’s lap ended with a big lock-up. As qualifying comes to an end, Chambers leads the charge with a lap time of 1:38.125, followed by Palmowski in second place and Pin in third.
Llyod in P4, Hausmann in P5, Felbermayr in P6, Gademan in P7, Chong in P8, Ferreira in P9, Block in P10, Ciconte in P11, Larsen in P12, Nobels in P13, Paatz in P14, Weug in P15, Crone in P16, Anagnostiadis in P17, and Havrda in P18 make up the remainder of the grid. It’s crucial to keep in mind that Race 1 is based on the Miami standings but will be run with the top 8 in reverse, even though qualifying was tense and exciting as we watched our drivers rise and fall. Races two and three will be influenced by qualifying; race two will also be conducted with the top eight in reverse.
Rivalries and Redemption
Chambers has been on pole before, but it remains to be seen if she will maintain it and win tomorrow or if her rivals will take the spot and the victory. Even though this weekend has been complicated by her car problems, Maya Weug is not to be taken lightly because she has demonstrated in the past that she is capable of making a major turnaround. Alongside Doriane Pin, a speed demon in silver who has been a fierce opponent during her stay in F1 Academy, fellow teammate and rival Alisha Palmowski will also be vying for a fast start and an overtake of Chambers.
