Öncü fights back to claim a sensational victory starting from P3 as the championship leader climbs 11 places up in damage limitation. The pole-sitter Moreira stays P2 after an exciting photo finish. Öncü took his first-ever Moto2 win at the finish line. It created the closest result in Moto2 history.
Rapid Start for Moreira
Moreira launched off the line from pole, leading into T1 ahead of Öncü and Baltus as his closest rivals. He soon lost the lead to Öncü and then got overtaken by Baltus as well, falling back into P3.
Further down the order, Holgado crashed into his teammate Alonso and ended both of their races early on. On the other hand, Canet had a strong start putting the leading trio under pressure. He then joined them as they swapped the lead between them.
Halfway Mark
In the middle of the race, Canet made a mistake and allowed Öncü and Moreira to get back in front. Öncü then started speeding up trying to build a gap to Baltus in P2, even breaking the lap record in the process.
Gonzalez also started speeding up going from P18 up to P8. He then managed to overtake Lopéz into P7 as well. In front of him, only Salač held his space in P6. It was damage limitation ride from the championship leader.
Canet started falling back, not being able to match the pace of leading three. He fell into P5 as Agius overtook him. At the same time, Moreira overtook Baltus to put pressure back on Öncü in the lead.
Last Lap to Go
With only one lap left on the timesheets, Moreira set the fastest lap and overtook Öncü. He looked set to win the race, but the Turkish rider wasn’t ready to give up just yet. On the final straight, he went on the outside and finished side by side with Moreira. The photo on the finish line proclaimed Öncü as the winner by 0.003 seconds only. That gap created a new record of closest Moto2 win in history.
The Best of the Rest
The last podium place was claimed by Baltus as Agius finished fourth behind him. Salač finished P5 after overtaking Canet to get his best results in the category so far (with P7 being his person best previously).
Gonzales in Points
Championship leader Gonzalez faded slightly in the final laps, ending up ninth behind Roberts and Ramirez. Lopez rounded out the top 10, with Guevara and Arenas behind.
