Electrifying Qualifying: Gunther’s Remarkable Drive Earns Him Pole

For Round 10, we’re back in Shanghai. We began qualifying following some exciting free practice sessions. Mitch Evans was given a very severe grid penalty of 80 places and a drive-through penalty after needing to modify many vehicle components, thus essentially ending the qualifying and race for today. 

Group stage A

Dennis, Beumi, Guenther, Cassidy, Hughes, Nato, Meuller, Maloney, Rowland, Da Costa, and Martara were in Group A. Dennis started us off with a strong lap that placed him in P1, but Nato and Hughes followed with some quick laps that placed Hughes in P1. Da Costa missed out on duels even though he appeared strong throughout free practice, as Hughes, Rowland, Maloney, Nato, and Guenther dominated the session. Maximilian Guenther finished first in Group A with a time of 1:09.939, followed by Dennis, Cassidy, and Rowland.

Group stage B

In Group B, the track is occupied by Wehrlein, Barnard, De Vries, Vergne, Vandoorne, Ticktum, Di Grassi, Evans, Bird, Frijn, and Beckmann. Degrassi nearly lost it on a large slide, but he managed to recover it, claiming P1 at the start of the session. Followed by De Vries separating the McLarens in P2, with Barnard taking P1. Wehrlein advances to P3 after putting in a lot of effort from P11. Barnard, De Vries, Wehrlein, and Beckmann are comfortably in the top 4, as Bird is pushed to P5, right out of duels. 

Duels

We begin with Cassidy and Dennis in the first quarterfinal. With the best lap time of 1:08.880, Cassidy wins.

Rowland leads the second quarterfinal, followed by Guenther. Gunther has claimed the lead with a time of 1:08.648 and advanced to the semifinals. In the third quarterfinal, Wehrelien and De Vries faced off, with Wehrelien leading at 1:08.683 and De Vries trailing at 1:08.742—a very close call, but Wehrelien won out.

In the fourth quarterfinal, Beckmann leads Barnard by 1:09.266. Beckmann is pushed out of the quarterfinals by Barnard, who takes the lead with 1:08.844.

Semifinals

Although Cassidy has a strong lap to start the semifinals, Gunther grabs the lead with 1:08.494 and advances to the finals. Following up with Wehrelien, Barnard leads at 1:08.503, and it looks like Barnard and Gunther will face off in the finals. 

Finals

Barnard and Gunther go head-to-head in the qualifying finals for Round 10 in Shanghai. In the Round 10 qualifying finals in Shanghai, Barnard and Gunther battle with each other. Barnard leads with a time of 1:08.621, but it’s not enough, as Gunther gets pole position with a time of 1:08.234, leaving Barnard in P2.
