Oscar Piastri delivered a superb lap under pressure to snatch pole position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, edging Max Verstappen by just 0.034 seconds in a qualifying session defined by red flags, strategic gambles and midfield surprises. George Russell’s late-lap masterstroke on medium tyres secured him a shock third, splitting the McLarens and setting up a fascinating grid for Sunday.
In scorching 40°C track temperatures, McLaren looked strong after topping all three practice sessions – but qualifying quickly spiralled into a battle of attrition.
Q1: Crashes, Red Flags and Chaos
Nico Hülkenberg led the early running, but it was Yuki Tsunoda who caused the first major incident, crashing heavily at Turn 6 and flipping onto the tyre barriers. The Japanese driver was unhurt, but the red flags halted proceedings with only ten drivers having set a time.
The restart brought more drama. Alpine mistakenly released rookie Franco Colapinto early, a misstep likely to bring a grid penalty. Then Colapinto crashed himself at Tamburello, triggering a second red flag. The stoppage froze the session just as Ollie Bearman looked to improve, but his lap was invalidated, dropping him to 19th.
Q1 Eliminated: Lawson, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Bearman, Tsunoda
Q2: Bold Strategy, Big Casualties
After a delay to confirm whether Bearman or Bortoleto advanced, Q2 resumed with just 14 cars. Verstappen set the early pace, but the McLarens quickly responded – Piastri going top with a 1:15.380.
Aston Martin gambled on medium tyres, having preserved an extra set of softs, and it paid off handsomely. Both Alonso and Stroll vaulted into Q3, while Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were shock eliminations in the midfield shuffle.
Q2 Eliminated: Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Bortoleto, Colapinto
Q3: Piastri Delivers When It Counts
With Ferrari and Hamilton out, Q3 offered a golden opportunity for the midfield. Verstappen initially led with a 1:14.772, just ahead of Piastri. Norris and Russell followed closely, while rookie Isack Hadjar stunned with P5 on his first Q3 appearance.
On the final runs, Piastri delivered a lap good enough for pole despite encountering traffic in the last sector. Verstappen couldn’t quite respond. Russell, on used mediums, produced a brilliant final effort to steal third from Norris.
Top 10 Grid – Emilia-Romagna GP:
- Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
- George Russell (Mercedes)

- Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin, on mediums)
- Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
- Alex Albon (Williams)
- Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
- Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls)
- Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
Hadjar was left frustrated after a snap of oversteer denied him a higher spot, but P9 marked a career best for the French rookie.
Sunday Set for Strategy Showdown
Piastri’s pole gives McLaren a strong hand heading into Sunday, while Verstappen looms large on the front row. Russell’s tyre strategy suggests Mercedes could yet be a wildcard, and with Leclerc and Hamilton both out in Q2, the grid is wide open for surprises.
If qualifying was anything to go by, Imola is primed for a classic.
