Piastri Triumphs Again: Rain, Strategy, and a McLaren That Stuns the Field

3–4 minutes

The sixth race of the season ends with Oscar Piastri taking his fourth victory, confirming himself as one of the standout drivers of the year. It was a weekend full of twists, strategic gambles, and unpredictable weather — a true test for both drivers and engineers.

Verstappen Starts on Pole, But It’s Not Enough

For the 43rd time in his career, Max Verstappen lined up on pole position. But from the very first lap, it was clear this wouldn’t be an easy ride. A lock-up at Turn 1, a brilliant start from rookie Antonelli, and a feisty Lando Norris — who cut the corner — set the tone for a dramatic race.

McLaren showed excellent pace despite having slightly lower top speed compared to Red Bull and Mercedes. The key? Strong tyre management and a well-balanced car throughout all stages of the race.

Rain on the Horizon and Strategy in Play

Weather forecasts had rain hitting around lap 25, especially targeting Turns 7 and 17 before spreading across the circuit. This threw tyre strategies into flux: medium-tyre runners needed to stop around lap 25, while those on hards, like Russell, could extend their stint and hope for a weather break.

Russell made good use of the hard compound, delivering strong pace and asking the team to let him pass as he believed he had more in hand. Meanwhile, Norris began a charge, executing a brilliant overtake on Russell on lap 7 and then passing Antonelli two laps later.

Piastri Takes the Lead — and Keeps It

On lap 14, Piastri managed to overtake Verstappen after Max ran wide out of Turn 1 — a move that had been building since lap 10. Verstappen, visibly frustrated with his brakes, struggled to avoid front lock-ups and was forced to take defensive lines that cost him time and tyre wear.

Norris soon followed, taking second place from Max on lap 19. McLaren was on the move.

Multiple Retirements

Bearman was the first major retirement, suffering a power unit failure on lap 28 that triggered a Virtual Safety Car. This gave several drivers — including Hamilton, Piastri, Norris, Leclerc, and Russell — a chance to pit with reduced time loss.

Russell rejoined ahead of Verstappen, gaining a crucial position. Sainz pulled off a bold move on Leclerc, while Albon passed Antonelli in a double overtake that highlighted Williams’ strong race pace.

Other retirements soon followed: Bortoleto (engine issue), Doohan (early puncture), and Lawson (sidepod damage). Along with Alonso — who spun earlier in the race — they remain the only drivers yet to score points this season.

Team Orders, Frustration, and Final Push

As Leclerc and Hamilton battled, team radio exchanges became tense. Hamilton believed he had more pace on his medium tyres and asked to be let through. Initially denied, the positions were finally switched on lap 39 — but Hamilton made it clear it wasn’t the team’s finest moment.

Meanwhile, Verstappen faded as Russell expertly managed the gap, keeping him consistently over a second behind and denying him DRS — a masterclass in race management.

The Final Word: Piastri’s Season Shines

Oscar Piastri crossed the line to take his fourth win out of the first six races — a remarkable achievement that cements his place as a serious title contender.

Albon continued his strong start to the season, delivering consistent and solid performances for Williams. Norris showed aggression and confidence, and Russell executed a near-flawless race under pressure.

With changing conditions, driver mistakes, and strategic masterstrokes, this race had everything — and the season is only just getting started.
