MIAMI, Florida — The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the Sunshine State for the first time in a decade, bringing Round 5 of Season 11 to the legendary Homestead Miami Speedway on Saturday 12 April. It’s back to the Florida racetrack with a rich history, where the all-electric racing series last raced the streets of downtown Miami back in 2015.
Then, the win fell to Nicolas Prost on the narrow and twisty Biscayne Bay Street Circuit. This time, though, Miami’s Formula E experience occurs in quite a different setting: a specially constructed 3.551km layout carved out of the historic Homestead circuit, famous for years of dramatic NASCAR races.
A Fresh Challenge at Homestead-Miami
The new configuration of the track, featuring 15 turns and three fast straights, will ensure high-speed fights, daring overtakes, and strategic energy management – all characteristics of Formula E’s races. GEN3 Evo cars, with improved performance and aerodynamics, will be pushed to their limits in their first competitive outing at this re-laid circuit.
Located on Miami-Dade County’s southern edge, the Speedway is a quick drive from the vibrant heart of Miami – an urban city teeming with energy, culture, and sporting passion.
Championship Battle: Rowland Leads the Charge
Nissan Formula E Team driver Oliver Rowland pulls into Miami sitting atop the Drivers’ Championship on 68 points. His recent victory in Jeddah capped a dominant weekend and reinforced his credentials as a serious title contender.
On his heels is Taylor Barnard, NEOM McLaren Formula E Team’s rising star. Already a frequent sight on the podium and a pole position, Barnard is aiming not only for points but for history – the possibility of becoming the youngest winner of a Formula E race ever.
Following closley behind the front duo are TAG Heuer Porsche’s António Félix da Costa and DS PENSKE’s Maximilian Günther, keeping things exciting. Günther, fresh off a win in Jeddah’s first race, is fourth in the standings and will be keen to excel on home soil for the Penske-linked team.
Sustainability Takes Center Stage in Miami
Formula E leads the way for sustainable sport, and Miami will be a important platform for the championship’s mission-driven programs.
Some of the top sustainability initiatives on the Miami E-Prix are:
Renewable Energy Mix: The race will be driven by solar power and clean HVO fuel mix.
FIA Girls on Track: 120 girls will participate in learning and career programs, empowering the next generation of motorsport experts.
Better Futures Fund: A 25,000€ grant to Sprout Up will support community gardening and food education projects in Miami.
Community Outreach: From hosting blind and visually impaired music students at the track to the FPL Electrathon for local high schoolers building electric karts, Formula E is investing deeply in Miami’s communities.
New Silverware
The FIA President’s Medal Debuts at the Miami E-Prix adds to its prestige. A new winner’s trophy for champions of races across the FIA’s flagship series. Awarded for the first time in Miami, the medals are made entirely from recycled material by Milanese atelier Libe Incisioni – a celebration of both victory and eco-innovation.
Formula E drivers will not just be competing for points – they’ll be battling for a piece of history.
Typical Miami Sunshine with a Hint of Heat
Fans can expect classic Floridia conditions on race weekend. Forecasts for Saturday suggest partly cloudy skies, with temperatures peaking at 29°C (84°F) and humidity hovering around 70%. While rain is unlikely, Miami’s microclimate always holds the potential for a surprise, particularly in the late afternoon. Heat management will be a top priority, as batteries and tires may be sensitive under extreme conditions.
