In the latest episode of “The Girls Who Eat, Breathe and Dream Motorsport” podcast, host Jamie has a fascinating conversation with James Coker—a passionate comedian, actor, and motorsport enthusiast. Released on March 19, 2025, this episode discusses James’s journey into content creation and his innovative work in the field of motorsport.
James Coker has built a specialist corner in the motorsport broadcasting niche. With Jamie on the call, Coker discussed openly how he weaves his work as a stand-up comedian and actor with his just recently found passion for motorsport, in an effort to create engaging and informative content.
One of the highlights of their interview was the topic of what role humor can play in content in motorsport. Jamie questioned James on why he thinks it’s necessary to add personality and humor to a sport that’s perceived as being so data-driven. James noted that motorsport is sometimes very ‘buttoned up’ due to being run by people with incredible privilege and wealth, complete with its technical nature and language. “Humor […] to make it more relating and accessible to fans,“ James responded. “When we are able to see these people, more as like regular people and not these athletes that are put upon a pedestal […], we’re able to relate to them.”, “Covering motorsport through the lens of humor helps to achieve that more.“
As James continued, it was clear that his approach is more distanced from pure journalism. He himself wants to be a fan first, sharing jokes or takes on motorsport that he otherwise would already share with friends. James underlines that he isn’t an expert yet, but that that isn’t his goal. “I get facts wrong or misremember things all the time. […] Because I’ve only been a fan for 2 years and while I’ve done my best to educate myself on the history.“ There were a lot of pushbacks that he felt, when he started because of people wanting to keep motorsport just about the races, statistics and the sport itself. Which James found very short-sided.
Their chat also touched on James’s experience of attending the Formula E races, where he had incredible access to the drivers. He described how these interactions allowed him to create content that is real. “In Formula E, the access to the drivers is just amazing,“ he described. “It allows you to dig deeper below the surface and create content that’s more personal and resonates on a deeper level with the audience. And Antonio Felix da Costa was so excited to do that with me.”
As the interview came to a close, Jamie asked James what his dreams were for the world of motorsport. While James has already had the opportunity to attend iconic events like the Formula E races and the Las Vegas GP, he’s eager to see more. “So many races I would love to go,“ he said. “But it’s expensive.” Nevertheless, he’s excited about watching Le Mans this year at the track.
For anyone interested in the intersection of content creation and motorsport, this episode offers a look at how humor and personality can shape the way in which we enjoy and consume the sport. James’s approach to including passion and humor in the motorsport media is a breath of fresh air, and his sketches are one of its kind doing it.
