With the 2025 Formula 1 season starts this weekend, McLaren has solidified its trust in Australian driver Oscar Piastri by signing a multi-year contract extension. He shortly teased the extension with a “Going to be a lovely day” and a photo of Melbourne sunshine on his Instagram Story before posting the finale facts an hour later.
The move precedes the start of the season in Australia, and it is indicative of the team’s trust in Piastri in addition to their commitment towards a shared future.
“I’m very proud to be continuing to represent this legendary team for many years to come”
, says the Aussie with confidence about the new deal. Piastri, whom McLaren recruited for 2023, has already proved himself time and again by scoring two Grands Prix and two sprint race victories, not to mention an overall 10 podiums and finishing fourth in the Drivers’ Championship in his second season in Formula 1.
The contract shows McLaren’s vision of a stable and strong driver duo, because teammate Lando Norris is under contract with a multi-year deal too.
“Further extending our partnership with Oscar is a symbol of our belief and trust in him as a driver, as well as a reflection of our shared ambition to continue in our fight for Championships together. ” – Andrea Stella, Team Principal
An added bonus is for sure, that this extension happens only a few days before Piastri’s home Grand Prix. It speaks volumes about McLaren’s passion to nurture talent and become the best in the cutthroat arena of Formula 1 to re-sign him so long before his contract was supposed to end in 2026.
